Nowlin School as adopted the Partnerships in Comprehensive Literacy model. Below y ou will can find out more about the different components of the model.

Literacy Block

A literacy block is a time period where the students are imersed in all areas of Literacy:  Reading, word study, handwriting, and writing

Components of the literacy block:

Familiar Reading:  This is reading books that the students have already been introduced to in class.

Shared Reading: This is where the students and the teacher read and explore books and poems together.

Word Study:  (formerly known as spelling).  This component focuses on spelling strategies rather than memorization of words.

Reading  groups:  The reading groups may consist of Guided Reading or Literature Discussion groups.  Guided Reading is very structured and guides the students to learn the importance of reading strategies.  Literature Discussion groups allow the students to explore literature and learn about author's craft.

Assisted Writing: This component will occur in First grade.  This type of writing allows the teacher to focus on student needs in small group instruction.

Writer's Workshop:  This block of time is set aside for students to practice the writing process and gain stamina in writing.  During this time students learn from the teacher,  have guided and independent practice,  individual conferences, and time to share their learning.

Corners (Kdg & 1st grades):  Corners are where the students have time to practice independently the important skills needed for reading and writing.  Students are at corners when the teacher is meeting with Guided Reading Groups.

Options (2nd-5th grades):  Options are independent activities that the teacher can assign to help promote content area learning (science, social studies, reading, writing, math).  These activities are things that the students have already covered in their content area learning.
